Every wardrobe has a few pieces that go wrong the moment they meet a washing machine: the silk blouse that comes out stiff, the wool blazer that shrinks a size, the velvet dress that loses its pile. The cause is almost always the fabric. Different fibres respond to water, heat and agitation in very different ways, and some simply can’t tolerate them.
Knowing which fabrics need professional care saves you from expensive mistakes. Here’s how to tell the difference before you reach for the detergent. You can also browse more garment-care guides on the First Class Laundry blog.
The label inside a garment is the manufacturer’s advice, and it’s worth reading before every wash. A circle symbol means the item is suited to dry cleaning, and a circle with a cross through it means it isn’t. A letter inside the circle tells your cleaner which type of solvent is safe to use.
The wording matters too. “Dry clean only” means water will likely damage the garment. “Dry clean recommended” gives you a little more room, but the risk is still yours. If a label has been cut out or has faded, treat the garment as delicate until you know otherwise.
Silk. Silk is strong but sensitive. Water can leave rings, dull the sheen or cause dyes to run, and body heat and perfume can mark it quickly. Silk shirts, scarves and eveningwear are best left to a specialist dry cleaning service.
Wool and cashmere. Wool fibres have tiny scales that lock together under heat and agitation, which is why a home wash can shrink a jumper beyond repair. Fine wools, tailored coats and cashmere knits hold their shape and softness far better when professionally cleaned.
Velvet. The pile that gives velvet its depth is easily crushed. Washing flattens it, and ironing can leave permanent marks. Professional finishing restores the nap without damaging it.
Rayon, viscose and acetate. These semi-synthetic fabrics feel luxurious but are weak when wet. They can shrink, warp or lose their drape in a single wash, so a “dry clean only” label on these should always be taken seriously.
Satin, chiffon and taffeta. Lightweight, flowing fabrics snag easily, and water spots on them are very hard to remove. They’re common in occasion wear, where a single mark can ruin the look of an outfit.
Leather and suede. These need their own treatment entirely. Water stiffens leather and stains suede, and the wrong product can strip natural oils or colour. Leather jackets, handbags and suede shoes should always go to someone who works with these materials. See our leather items cleaning and shoe cleaning services.
Beaded, sequinned and embroidered pieces. Even if the base fabric is washable, decorations can loosen, tarnish or bleed colour. Professional cleaners handle these gently and protect the detailing.
Structured tailoring. Suits and blazers contain layers of lining, padding and interfacing. Water can make these layers shrink at different rates, leaving the garment puckered or misshapen.

Not everything needs specialist treatment, and over-cleaning can waste money. These fabrics generally cope well with a regular wash when the label agrees:
The exception is any garment in these fabrics with special trims, bonded layers or heavy structure. A cotton jacket with stiff lining, for example, may still need professional pressing.
Heat, humidity and air conditioning all take a toll on fabrics here. Sweat soaks into delicate fibres faster in high temperatures, and fine dust and sand settle into woollens and velvets. Sudden changes between hot streets and cold offices can also make natural fibres hold onto odours. Delicate fabrics tend to need attention sooner than they would in a milder climate, even if they look clean on the surface.
A little communication helps your cleaner do a better job. Before handing over a garment:
When comparing dry cleaners in Dubai, look for a team that inspects each piece before treatment and explains how it will be cleaned. That one step prevents most fabric mishaps. You can check our prices before you book, or contact us with any questions.
Once your delicate items are sorted, the rest of your wardrobe, along with towels, bedding and gym clothes, can be handled by reliable laundry services in Dubai so you don’t spend your weekends sorting and folding. Our wash and fold service is ideal for everyday loads.
Silk, wool, velvet, rayon, leather and heavily decorated pieces are the fabrics that deserve a professional’s attention, while sturdy cotton and synthetics can usually cope with a regular wash. Check your labels, know your fibres and when in doubt, choose the gentler route.
